Winter – Backing Track
View Fiona Lander's Full StoreTori Amos has been a huge inspiration to me ever since her album Little Earthquakes came out in 1992. Winter is a beautiful, sensitive song from this album which like most of the material is based on childhood memories. It is a piano based song in Eb minor which features a solo voice in Verse 1 and again later on. Verses 2, 3, 4 and 5 are carefully arranged to give all three sections of the choir interesting lines to sing, from accompanying hums and oohs, to snippets of melody and additional harmonies that help to emphasise certain lines of the text. There are also some vocal slides and whispered words to add extra drama to the performance!
NB. Part 3 does go down to a low Db in verse 2 but only shadows the tune for one line so could be omitted if need be.
Singers will enjoy the warmth and togetherness of the harmonies in this song, particularly in the Chorus, which is probably a good place to start. Work on breath control and phrase endings as this type of song is particularly effective with all the dynamic subtleties.
