While Shepherds Watched (Ilkley Moor) – Sheet MusicView Craig McLeish's Full Store
Wikipedia lists at least ten tunes that have been set to these words. This is one the more ‘folky’ options to feature in our selection and we think it works pretty well. The tune of “On Ilkla Moor Baht ‘at’ is actually called Cranbrook and was originally composed by a cobbler from Canterbury named Thomas Clark.
This is great fun to sing – watch out that to make the tune work there is a slightly odd repetition of various syllables in line 1(verses 2 and 5). Because the verses are all essentially the same music we have only put verses 1, 2 and 6 on the learning track. Variation can be obtained by using smaller groups, perhaps solo voices, and dynamics which have been left to you to decide.
