There are several theories as to who or what was the source of inspiration for the lyrics of this song by Bob Marley and the Wailers. It was originally the 4th track on Side 2 of their 1977 album, “Exodus” and later released as a single in 1980 which reached the Top 20 in the U.K.

I like to think that the “three little birds” were inspired by the canaries that Tony Gilbert, a long-time friend of Bob Marley and present at the time the song was written, remembered appearing on the windowsill at Marley’s home in Hope Road.

In this arrangement the choir “breaks out” into birdsong in the verse, “Woke up this morning, smiled with the rising sun…”
