Things We Said Today (SAA) – Learning Tracks

This is another favourite Beatles song of mine from the 1964 album “A Hard Day’s Night”.  As a young guitarist, it was the dramatic strummed guitar chords at the start and between the verses that captured my attention. I’d been learning some Spanish pieces and it reminded me of flamenco guitar. It’s this memory that has led me to give the first and second alto parts a shared rhythmic accompaniment in the verses, singing percussive consonants inspired by the drama of castanets and fiery guitar strums!

The soprano part sings the melody throughout. The middle eight of the original song sweeps in with the major key, a different strumming pattern and tambourine. In my arrangement I’ve affected a change by giving the accompanying parts words in a rhythmic interplay with each other and the melody. Once the notes are learned, this calls for an exciting and tight rhythmic performance.
