The Truth Sent From Above – Learning TracksView Craig McLeish's Full Store
A beautiful and haunting old folk melody originating in Shropshire and Herefordshire, collected by Cecil Sharp in the early 20th Century but is much older. Vaughan Williams uses it as his opening carol in the Fantasia on Christmas Carols (1912).
I have used the Soprano to anchor most of the verses, with other parts taking turns to accompany. NB when the altos sing in verse 4 the tune is given to the lower voices, so Tenors and Basses need to learn the tune as well as their own part.
Tempo wise there should be a gentle and free approach. I thoroughly recommend performing this without scores so that the maximum control can be effected by the conductor to keep everyone flowing together.
