The Parting Glass – Learning Tracks
View Craig McLeish's Full StoreA beautiful and plaintive traditional song originally from Scotland but very popular in Ireland too. The oldest printed version was in 1770 but the song is doubtless much older. The Parting Glass was a final dram offered to a departing guest once they had saddled their steed – the equivalent of “One for the Road”.
There are many versions of the verses, I have picked what I consider the most common 3, and this type of 4 part harmony is the kind of thing you’d hear in a pub in Dublin some time after midnight. Suitable for a community choir at any time and perfect for a Chamber Choir who need something gentle as a final encore.
