Te Harinui – Sheet MusicView Wendy Sergeant's Full Store
This was a request from one of my singers who had fond memories of singing it in New Zealand. It tells the story of Rev Samuel Marsden preaching the Gospel at the Bay of Islands in the early 1800s. It’s a lovely piece with rich chords and a gentle sway. Encourage your singers to sing through the long notes – especially on the last “i” of te harinui to get the best effect. You can play with the dynamics – the 2nd verse “within a quiet bay” can start more quietly and the double chorus at the end can be started quietly and then up to full strength for the last time.
The piece can be sung in 3 parts as well as 4, simply by dropping the bass line. This works just as well for choirs which struggle to split the lower parts. Alternatively, the tenor part can be sung by the altos.
