Sing For Joy – Learning Tracks
View Ian Riley's Full StoreSing For Joy was conceived just after choirs were unable to meet, rehearse and perform together in the same space; the uplifting lyrics evoke the friendship, camaraderie and love of singing as a choir, the dark clouds of separation will make meeting as a choir and singing together so much sweeter. With melodic and lyric repetition and an ‘earworm melody’ this piece is perfect to sing from memory; the sound is modern and contemporary with a folk influence and includes some syncopation and beautiful harmonies.
The song reflects the times we are living through, it’s aim is to bring choirs together in hope and joy. The Milton Keynes community choir has already given it a ‘test drive’ for eveyone and here are some of the quote from choir members after singing it together (albeit virtually):
“Really lovely and easy to pick up my part” – Penny (Tenor)
“A lovely uplifting song with beautiful harmony” – Helen (Alto)
“It flows beautifully and is a joy to sing” – Liz (Soprano)
“A truly uplifting song, written for our choir and we love singing it. Can’t wait to sing it together in person!” – Fi (Alto)
“A really emotional song which will hold memories of these days in many years to come…” – Chris (Bass)
“A song that brings you together even though we are apart” – Sam (Tenor)
“The melody and words are so beautiful – especially for this difficult time” – Cathy (Tenor)
From a mezzo piano start the song builds as more sections are added, be sure the melody soars above the vocal backing at letter B, tenors and basses are encouraged to produce a rich and resonant sound when they carry the tune at letter C; after the Chorus a key change introduces some unison when everyone gets to sing the melody, this rousing finale in the most happy of keys adds sparkle and joy to finish the song.
