ROUNDS 5 - CC - SECURE

Jubilate Deo stands alone in the pantheon of the classic rounds in that it can be divided into 6 parts, and it sounds wonderful every time! I like to build up to this moment with a simpler 3 part version where the entries happen at bars 1, 3 and 5.  Once this has been mastered by everyone they are ready for the 6 part, which obviously takes the unwary by surprise as the entries are only one bar apart.  Even with this short round, effort should be made to phrase the music, starting the “Ju” of Jubilate with room to grow into the “la-te” – the Alleluias should be sung bell like and strong. Dynamics work well here so maybe experiment with a quiet section in the middle before bringing everyone back to their rousing best. Ideal for the start of any workshop.

Tropical Fruit Twist is an adaptation of something that has done the rounds of many you tube presentations.  Attempts to find an author have all come up with Anon so please write and tell us if you know of a composer who originated this masterpiece!  Actions always help here, and although it probably suits younger singers better I have had many an octogenarian up and grooving with their mangoes and kiwis like spring chickens, so it’s for all ages really. The parts work really well as counterpoint and its basically a bit of fun.  You can also ask your singers to suggest new fruits and tunes.  The Passion Fruit Papaya addition was written spontaneously during a sight reading workshop in 2018!

Music Alone is German of origin but the composer again seems to be unknown.  I have adapted the last line to add harmony where the original just copied the first line.  This tune is not obvious so take great car to teach it 100% securely before splitting into parts.

Oh Lovely Spring is one I only recently came across and it’s nice to add another round where the composer is known and revered.

This resource pack contains single part and multiple part learning track audio files, and the separate piano backing track for Tropical Fruit Twist as well!

  • A good mix

So far we have only sung Jubilate Deo (beautiful – hoping to sing it in the Cathedral in December) and Tropical Fruit mix (great fun to start a practice – gets everyone laughing).
Looking forward to singing the other two pieces.

  • Rounds 5: Oh Lovely Spring

Classy without being difficult. And perfect for singing in the Spring of course.
