Only You – Backing Track

This is a very stripped-back version of the Yazoo original, inspired both by Alison Moyet’s cover for a TV advert, and the well-known cover by The Flying Pickets. The opening is free tempo, and if you’re in good acoustic, it’s lovely to leave nice big gaps between each phrase, before the accompaniment kicks in.

In the middle section, the melody is in the piano, whilst the choir sing interweaving accompanying lines – getting the balance of this right takes a little practice, but produces a fascinating texture (and gives your accompanist a chance to shine!).

Subtle dynamics are the key to this arrangement – never letting the volume rise above moderate, whilst still creating lots of variation within that quieter space.

A backing track is available here, containing the piano accompaniment, but this works just as well (if not better) with live piano accompaniment.
