Old Cape Cod (SAA) – Learning Tracks

I first became aware of this song through listening to Groove Armada’s 1997 UK hit song, At the River, which featured a sample of Old Cape Cod, sung by Patti Page.Once I’d heard the original, first recorded by Patti Page in 1957, I was hooked. The song started life as a poem written by Claire Rothrock, for whom Cape Cod was a favourite vacation spot. Milton Yakus, at Ace Recording Studios in Boston, adapted the poem into song lyrics and his associate, Allan Jeffrey, wrote the music.

For me, this song evokes memories of warm, sunny stretches of sand and that sense of being somewhere where you can let go of the stresses and strains of life.

The accompanying “dum da dum” phrases in alto 2 and “doo…doo doo-doo” phrases in the soprano part should sound relaxed and smooth – imagine taking a leisurely stroll along a beach. First altos can revel in the glorious melody, until the middle 8 at “winding roads” when the soprano part takes over. The triplets at “watching the moonlight on Old Cape Cod Bay” should be as smooth and relaxed as possible once the notes are learned. The harmonic clashes here cause a pleasant tingle, leading to the cascade effect of the final line.
