Miri It Is – Sheet Music

One of my choir members in Guildford Vox Community Choir requested this over a decade ago and it’s stayed in our repertoire ever since. It is England’s earliest known recorded song.  It was written down in 1225 and it’s basically a moan about the weather – our favourite tradition.  I’ve arranged it to be layered up, starting with the basses, but everyone can start with the melody and peel off onto their harmonies one part at a time if you prefer.

The words translate to:

Merry it is while summer lasts and the birds sing
But now the harsh winds draw near and fiercer weather
Oh, but this night is long
And I, who have been much wronged
Sorrow and mourn and starve
