Adele’s wonderful cover of this Bob Dylan original certainly brought it to a whole new audience. She makes subtle changes to the melody which brings it up to date, but the slowly descending harmony is unchanged and provides a lovely landscape for these beautiful words. I have added a couple of parts at moments to thicken up the texture a bit which is why this is classed as intermediate. There is also a variation in the final verse where the altos take the tune, and the sops step back into accompany mode – make sure these parts are very floaty and quiet to obtain the right balance.
Breath control will certainly be tested here as the ooh phrases are very long. Maybe some staggered breathing will be needed to sustain these long lines. Quite a moving piece and ideal as one of those effective quiet encores after a loud final song.
We really enjoyed singing this via Zoom, learning it over several weeks as it’s fairly challenging for a community choir. Beautiful arrangement of a beautiful song. When we come back to singing in person we might need to edit it a bit to cut down on the number of parts. Or perhaps we’ll just go for it!
