Locus Iste – Learning Tracks
View Craig McLeish's Full StoreBruckner was known more for his symphonies and other large scale orchestral works, less so for his choral writing. However there are 4 very fine motets which are still in the repertoire of most cathedrals and churches, and this is the most accessible. Written in 1869 for the dedication of a new chapel in the cathedral at Linz, Austria, it starts with a fairly simple homophonic section, opening out to some chromatic but singable imitation at “Irreprehensibilis est”. It has a become a firm favourite of my Community Choir.
The translation of the Latin is:
This place was made by God
A priceless sacrament
It is without reproach
