This song’s title was gleaned from the wisdom of Mary Church Terrell.

Two distinct forms of the song are presented – the long form’s first lines lean heavily on ‘Life Every Voice and Sing’ (by James and J. Rosamund Johnson). There is also imagery from Octavia Butler’s aspirational fiction.  The imagery of a “hand wide and eyes on high” reflects the journey of a climber who is focused on their journey forward while reaching their palm ‘backwards’ to be of support to others on their way.  This is the prevailing sentiment of both pieces.

A possible approach is to begin by teaching the melody to all singers. This lays the foundation for the main countermelodies. Finally, bring in the basses. Let this song be celebratory as a joy-filled intention!  Feel free to direct dynamics as feels appropriate.
