Lay A Garland – Learning TracksView Craig McLeish's Full Store
An absolute gem of the Romantic resurgence of part songs, and a firm favourite of many of my choral singing friends and colleagues. Very much influenced by the madrigals of 200 years previous, the part writing overlaps, imitates and entwines just like those offerings of Gibbons Morley or Weelkes, but with a slightly more adventurous harmonic pallette. Don’t be put off by the 8 part magnitude of this – each voice is quite carefully designed to have memorable tunes within the part. It might take a while to learn but the overall effect is glorious, and definitely worthwhile.
When we are allowed to get back to full choral concert making I would recommend surrounding the audience (if you can) with a complete circle of singers to give them a “surround sound” effect – this has been used in the past with great results and a memorable moment for everyone.
