This is a setting of a poem by Colonel Henry Heveningham (1651 – 1700). The first seven words are taken from the opening of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Purcell also set the poem, three times!

In this setting the tune is in the soprano part throughout, although everyone sings it in unison in the first verse.
