Gaudete (trad.) – Sheet Music

Always a favourite with choir members and audiences. Kids love singing it too – even teenagers! Perhaps its a bit like Mediaeval rock music?  This version is a cappella and is close to the original sung almost 600 years ago. Each part of the choir has one Latin verse to sing so no one has to sing the entire song by any means.  We have done our best with the Latin  – there are two extreme ways to go here – very old English folky pub style like Steeleye Span with their GaudayTAYS… or the more Cathedral tradition of flat Italian vowels with no diphthongs.  We favour the latter but end up with something in between.  I’ve found its best not to get too precious  – as long as most of us agree and we sound like we’re trying to sing the same pronunciation!  Plenty of gusto required here – and some subtle piano sections to make an arrangement of all the repetition.

  • Gaudete (trad.) – Sheet Music

This is the best arrangement I have come across of this very popular Christmas carol. Once the voice sections have learnt their part for the chorus, most of the work is done. Each section gets a chance to lead a verse and duet with another voice part.
