This dramatic and moving song was written by Sean Cooney, a member of the Northeast folk band The Young’uns. Sean was inspired on hearing a radio interview with Hesham Modamani, a Syrian refugee who had to leave his country after his brother went missing. With his friend Feras Abukhalif he swam a perilous 5km sea crossing from the shores of Turkey to Greece. They survived and both men are now settled in Europe.
Lots of support is needed to help singers through the long and sustained phrases, try getting them to imagine each phrase is like a wave. This imagery is particularly helpful in the dramatic verse from bar 45 where the altos and basses need to shape their phrases alongside the main melody in the sopranos and tenors.
