Crux Fidelis – Sheet Music

View Craig McLeish's Full Store

Once you have heard this piece you might wonder why there is no other music attributed to John IVth of Portugal – verily one of the true “One Hit Wonders” of the Renaissance.  The reason this little gem is so effective might be the short phrases, and the startling number of keys he modulates through – if you were to write a chord chart for say a lute or harpsichord you would need 27 different chords and inversions.

Here is a translation of the 6th century Latin text:

Faithful Cross
High above all others,
Noblest of trees,
Nothing so blessed has grown there
Neither branches or blossoms.
Sweet wood, Sweet nails,
Sweet burden hanging on you, Amen.
