SATB Version

SSAA Version

This song sets two lines from the poem, The Tables Turned, by William Wordsworth. I was introduced to these words through a connection with the Ilkley-based artists, Juliet and Jamie Gutch, who create mobile sculptures, drawing inspiration from Nature. Their delicate oak mobiles have the words from the poem, “Come forth into the light of things, Let Nature be your teacher,” marked on them with pyrography.

These words chimed with me as I was thinking about Earth Day and prompted me to write a song. Juliet has envisaged singers surrounding the suspended mobile sculptures and breathing the music into the shared space. On hearing the music, she wrote: “The song is both gentle and strong: the words shine out and somehow you have achieved such a sense of balance and other worldliness whilst also retaining such a sense of humanity of the voice.”

Wordsworth composed his poems as he walked, his lines using “enjambement”, where phrases run from one line to another. I hope that the piece evokes this sense of walking in Nature, offering space for reflection for both singers and listeners alike.
