And All That Jazz – Learning TracksView Wendy Sergeant's Full Store
This is an opportunity for your choir to do some sassy musical theatre. This song in the show and the film “Chicago” is hotter than hot! It’s great fun to sing.
The “wah, wah” in the top 3 parts at the beginning needs to be in a twangy voice – like a muted trumpet. The soprano has the tune at the beginning of each verse and then the tenor takes it over (with the bass) so the top two parts need to sing down a bit for the low parts to be heard. The basses lead a semitone key change into the third verse which takes a bit of practice. In the last verse the tenors have the best lines of the song “oh you’re gonna to see her sheba shimmy shake, oh, she’s gonna shimmy til her garters break!”. Make sure there’s a sudden drop in volume for the unison “if she’d hear her baby’s queer” (i.e. crazy about jazz) and then back up again for the “all that jazz” and then the whispered ending.
We are a smallish A’Capella choir in a rural area of Australia and have only been able to get back to face to face singing in recent months so Christmas music has been our main focus.
However we have made a start on All that Jazz and the choir members absolutely love it. A lot of the members have rudimentary technical music knowledge so the audios along with the sheet music suits our learning style beautifully.
Because the song is well known and the parts are relatively easy to pick up, the girls are producing a good sound already . It won’t take a lot of work to bring it to a polished performance standard. They are going to have a lot of fun performing this one . Thanks Community Choir, we are very grateful for your music resources.
