A Keelie Makolay – Sheet Music
View Craig McLeish's Full StoreWe love getting in a circle and singing simple African songs. The parallel harmony world is not one we are often brought up in but once you start to get it it really makes sense, and sometimes we have fun guessing what the parts are going to do once we know the tune! This is from Ghana, the translation is simply “Hey Makolay, do you want to come out and play?” “Yes I want to come out and play!”.
It is ok to swoop a bit up to notes when singing these short choruses. It’s part of the style and is fun to try! The opening lines could be sung by the conductor or a soloist or all the tenors! Experiment with dynamics, having different singers chant the start.
Maybe even a quartet could do a verse on their own. Movement can be added and a quick scout around You Tube will often throw up some ideas – not all of them useful!
